Your Heating System: 3 Things You Can Do This Summer
Keeping your furnace happy and healthy is probably not the first thing on your mind as we dive into summer 2020 – but with things as unpredictable as they are right now, it’s probably a good idea to stay one step ahead of any potential problem in your West Virginia home.
Heating System Summer Checklist
Here are three things you can do this summer to make sure your heating system is ready for action when the time comes later this year:
Check your air filters – Checking your HVAC air filters is something you should do throughout the year, including during the summer months (especially if your furnace and air conditioner share a common filter). If your filters are washable, clean them; if they are disposable, replace them. Clogged filters won’t keep dirt, dust, and debris out of your living space or your heating equipment. The result? Higher bills, poorer air quality, and a greater risk for heating system breakdowns.
Test your thermostat – An inaccurate thermostat will cost you money and comfort, so be sure to have it checked periodically checked by a professional (this is often included in your annual heating tune-up). If you have a zoned heating system that includes multiple thermostats, test each one separately.
Check and clean your condenser – Early summer is a good time to inspect and clean your outdoor condenser. Check the lines leading to and from the unit for any obvious damage; if you find some, contact us for service. Then it’s time to give your condenser a good cleaning – just be sure to turn off power at the breaker before you begin. Remove leaves, branches, or any other large debris that may have accumulated during the offseason, then clean the condenser with mild detergent and a hose. If you notice any significant damage to the condenser’s “fins,” contact us for a repair.
