At Roach Energy, we speak to homeowners every day who want to know if they are making the best home energy choices for their families and the planet. Many households in the Eastern Panhandle use heating oil, and they mistakenly think this fuel still generates black smoke and lots of soot.
Heating oil has undergone many changes since we started doing business in Berkeley, Morgan, Jefferson, and Washington counties in 1952. It’s greener than ever and almost unparalleled for efficient heat generation.
Is heating oil green?
Today’s heating oil is light years cleaner than the heating oil your grandparents used. For example, all the heating oil you use today is ultra-low sulfur. It contains a sulfur content of 15 ppm (parts per million) compared to the old fuel’s content of roughly 4,000 ppm. This makes a significant difference in improving air quality.
And the heating fuel industry is not finished. More heating oil than ever contains biodiesel made from recycled and renewable feedstocks. This reduces greenhouse gas emissions dramatically!
How efficient is heating oil?
Heating your home with oil is also incredibly efficient these days. Firstly, heating oil can generate a lot of warmth: 138,500 Btu (British thermal units) per gallon, according to the Department of Energy. You would need about 134 cubic feet of natural gas or 41 kilowatt hours of electricity to produce that amount of heat.
And today’s heating oil-powered furnaces and boilers are more fuel-efficient than ever before. On average, contemporary heating oil systems consume about 500 gallons less each year than in the 1970s. That helps the environment and your bottom line!
How does heating oil compare to electricity?
Many people claim that converting to all-electric heating can reduce a home’s carbon impact. But that ignores the reality that the power plants producing the energy to run electric home heating are far from green. West Virginia’s power grid is heavily reliant on coal for generation. Its carbon intensity is incredibly high, and that’s before you consider the lower energy efficiency that many electric home heating systems offer.
