Hearth inserts and gas logs ensure comfort, safety, and efficiency.
We don’t need to tell you that Martinsburg and eastern West Virginia can get mighty frigid this time of year. Wouldn’t it be nice to enjoy a bit of additional heat on a freezing night, especially when it comes with a stunning fire in your hearth?
At Roach Energy, we sell, install and service propane fireplace products throughout the Eastern Panhandle region. These convenient, attractive appliances also offer fantastic efficiency and safety.
Fuel Efficiency for Gas Fireplaces
Propane fireplaces are already some of the most convenient ways to enjoy supplemental heat and charming ambiance from your hearth. You can get an instant, spellbinding flame with the turn of the dial, the push of a remote or even a swipe on a smartphone app. This is infinitely easier than chopping and lugging wood around, getting down on the floor to stoke a flame and waiting all night for the embers to die down.
Today’s gas fireplaces are also highly efficient. Propane hearth products can achieve Fireplace Efficiency (FE) ratings of over 90%, compared to only about 15% FE for wood fireplaces. If you only occasionally use your propane fireplace, it may require as few as 25 gallons of propane per year.
Lower Emissions with Propane Fireplaces
From an environmental and air quality perspective, propane hearth products have excellent benefits. Wood smoke contains fine particulate matter that, according to the Environmental Protection Agency, can trigger asthma symptoms and cause illnesses like bronchitis. Propane emits virtually no particulate matter.
Propane also has a lower carbon intensity (the amount of carbon dioxide released to generate a given amount of energy) than pretty much any other home fuel besides natural gas. Unlike natural gas, propane contains no methane, an extremely potent greenhouse gas.
Efficiency of Vented vs. Vent-Free Gas Fireplaces
There are both direct-vent or vent-free propane fireplace products, and the one you choose will determine how efficient its heat generation is. Direct-vent fireplaces require an open chimney or flue to vent combustion products outdoors. They have more realistic flames, but you lose some heating efficiency through the venting process.
Vent-free fireplaces have better heating efficiency but smaller flames. And you cannot place them in enclosed spaces or bedrooms. (Some local ordinances prohibit vent-free products inside homes altogether.)
