Propane usage varies widely across households. Factors like the number of propane appliances, the frequency of their use and the outdoor temperatures all play a role in how quickly a home consumes fuel. Whether you rely on propane for heating, water heating, cooking or other household functions, keeping an eye on your propane tank gauge is essential.
At Roach Energy, we not only deliver propane to homes across the Eastern Panhandle region, but we’re also here to help you understand how to monitor your fuel levels effectively. Let’s break down how to read your propane tank gauge, why your tank is never filled to 100%, and the dangers of running out of propane.
Your propane tank uses a float gauge to measure how full it is. This gauge — found under the tank dome — displays the percentage of the tank’s capacity currently filled with liquid propane, not the number of gallons in the tank. If you see “50” on the gauge of your 500-gallon tank, that means it holds approximately 250 gallons of propane.
While the gauge might seem straightforward, there are some key things to keep in mind. Propane volume can fluctuate with temperature changes. Readings may vary slightly between day and night. That said, your gauge gives a general, reliable snapshot of how much fuel you have left, helping you determine when it’s time for your next delivery.

If your gauge reads close to 80% after a delivery, don’t worry — you’re not being short-changed on fuel! This is part of what’s called the “80/20 Fill Rule.”
Because propane expands and contracts significantly with changes in temperature (up to 17 times more than water for the same temperature increase), propane companies only fill aboveground tanks to about 80% of their capacity. It leaves room for fuel expansion. Rest assured, you’re only billed for the gallons of propane delivered, not the empty space in your tank.
